Short Film l Backstage Photographer

This project explores the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of Mas (masquerade) within Notting Hill Carnival, highlighting its roots in Caribbean traditions and its role as a powerful medium for storytelling, resistance, and empowerment. Led by artistic director Symone Williams and the Genesis Mas Band, the project emphasizes the preservation of Mas as both a living tradition and an evolving art form that reflects contemporary influences while honoring its origins in Trinidad and Tobago.

Through costume design, character portrayal, and documentary storytelling, the project showcases how Mas communicates narratives of history, identity, and social change. It also brings attention to the craftsmanship and collaborative effort behind the creation of elaborate carnival costumes, as well as the cultural importance of Mas within the Caribbean diaspora in the UK.

As a backstage photographer for this project, I documented the behind-the-scenes process of costume creation, preparation, and performance. My work captured intimate moments of artistic development, craftsmanship, and the lived experience of participants involved in the Mas tradition.

My photography was featured and highlighted during a BBC interview with the project’s creator, Symone Williams, contributing to the visual storytelling and public presentation of the project.
